Sans Serif fonts are very plain (like the one bing used in this journal) and unstylized. They're very basic and general; good for ensuring a casual feeling, but limiting if a very creative and innovative text design is required. In comparison, Serif fonts are very stylized and often have fancy edges and points on them; they are more visually interesting and look a bit more formal.
