Journal #1: Contrast & Emphasis

Updated: Sep 19, 2018

Contrast is the state of being strikingly different from something else, typically something in juxtaposition or close association. My design, which is an arrangement of dark purples flowers on a similarly colored background, demonstrates subtle contrast by using a bright yellow to highlight the biggest flower. This nearly washed-out yellow tone draws attention to the central flower by outlining it, and gentley dusting the center of the flower like pollen; Yellow is also opposite of purple on the color wheel.

Emphasis is the special importance, value, or prominence given to something. To show a very simple example of emphasis, I drew a few evenly spaced out diagonal lines, and then cut sections out into a rectangle using the scissors tool (I also drew a rectangle to help me accurately cut out the shape). After that was finished, I colored the freshly cut sections of the lines in a very saturated red. The red line segments are striking, and clearly form a rectangle on first view — thus, they have been emphasized.
