White space is classified as the space between design elements, and despite its name, the color of the given spaces does not have to be white. However, white space is just as much an element of design as drawn shapes, images, and text are as it can be used to accentuate the overall design and increase its attractiveness. For example, there are lots of important white spaces to consider when dealing with text: tracking, vertical scale, horizontal scale, kerning, and more. Lots of white space can appear empty, but with well placed elements an abundance of white space can create a sense of minimalism. Minimized white space may appear cluttered, but if the elements are arranged in a pleasing way it can appear merely full rather than overstocked (unless that's the look you're going for).
