Journal #6: Line & Shape

Lines are continuous marks with various lengths, thicknesses, and shape/direction. Lines are essentially the backbone (to me, at least) of most art pieces, because the first step to art is typically line art; when it comes to design, it is not always the same first step, but line still plays a very crucial role in both mediums. In the example below (source), curving lines are used to create an effect that mimics that of a waterslide.

Shapes are create when lines form together, or enclose an area together. For example, three lines closing together creates a triangle, four lines can create either a square, rectangle, or a polygon, and so on and so forth. Shapes, like lines, are a very crucial piece of art and design, because there is no way to have art without shape; even abstract art has shapes. Art is not art without shape. In the example below (source), straight lines connect to form jagged, colorful shapes. Additionally, lines near the top, left-side, and bottom of the image have enclosed the respective edges of the square.
